The Judge's Responsibility in DUI Cases

Video (1:31 )

In this video segment, Indiana Chief Justice Randall T. Sheppard describes the seriousness of the judge's role in deciding DUI cases and emphasizes why judges need to know the science of impairment in addition to the law.

Pharmacology and Toxicology of Alcohol

Video (8:12)

This video segment explains standard drink equivalents, how alcohol is absorbed by the body, how sex and weight can affect absorption, how alcohol is distributed throughout the body, how alcohol is metabolized, and how it is eliminated from the body.

Driving While Impaired and Standardized Field Sobriety Tests

Video (7:50)

This video segment describes the four types of impairment caused by alcohol that affect driving: loss of judgment, vision and hearing impairment, clumsiness of voluntary muscles, and decreased awareness of surroundings. The video then describes and demonstrates three standardized field sobriety tests used to establish probable cause: Horizontal Eye Gaze Nystagmus, walk and turn, and one leg stand. The video also reviews the accuracy of standardized field sobriety tests in detecting alcohol at 0.08% or above.

Tolerance to Alcohol

Video (2:02)

This brief video segment describes how individuals develop tolerance to alcohol, how uncommon such tolerance is in the general population, and how tolerance to alcohol enables individuals to disguise intoxication in all standardized field sobriety tests except the Horizontal  Gaze Nystagmus test.

Breath Tests

Video (8:38)

This video segment describes the differences between portable and evidentiary breath tests.  The video then demonstrates the method approved in Indiana for administering an evidentiary breath test on the BAC Datamaster machine.

Common Evidentiary Challenges to Breath Tests

Video (3:18)

This video segment describes common challenges to the admission of breath test results in DUI cases, including the presence of foreign objects in the mouth during testing, vomiting and burping during the observation period, complications from pulmonary disorders or inhaled solvent fumes, exhalation of acetone because of illness, and the effect of a fever on breath test results.

Drugs and Drug Recognition

Video (9:44)

This video segment defines drugs for purposes of highway safety; describes seven classifications of drugs and their impact on users; explains the behavioral and physical indicators of drug impairment that drug recognition experts look for; describes the difficulties inherent in detecting drug impairment because of the additive, antagonistic, and overlapping effects of combined drug use; and explains the duration of detectability of various drugs in blood and urine.

Medical Conditions

Video (1:02)

This brief video segment describes medical conditions that can be confused with drug use and drug impairment.

Drug Testing

Video (4:13)

This video segment describes the relative advantages and disadvantages of urine and blood tests for drug detection, classification, and quantification.  The video segment also describes the differences between screening tests and confirmatory tests.
